Since 1944, the National Research Council has published 10 editions of the Nutrient Requirements of Swine. This benchmark has guided nutritionists and other professionals in academia and the pig and feed industries in the development and implementation of pig nutrition and feeding programs.
The pork industry has undergone considerable changes since the publication of the tenth edition in 1998 and some of the requirements and recommendations set out at the time are no longer relevant or appropriate.
The 11th revised edition of Nutritional requirements of pork builds on previous editions published by the National Research Council. Much new research has been published over the past 15 years and there is a large amount of new information for many nutrients.
In addition to a thorough and current assessment of the literature on the energy and nutritional requirements of pigs at all stages of life, this volume includes information on feed ingredients from the biofuel industry and other new ingredients, digestible phosphorus requirements and its concentrations in food ingredients, a review of the effects of food additives and food processing, and strategies to increase nutrient retention and thereby reduce faecal and urinary excretions that could contribute to pollution of the environment. The feed ingredient composition tables are significantly updated.
